Limoges, France,
located approximately 200 miles southwest of Paris along the Vienne
River, is world renowned for its famous porcelain. In fact, Limoges
porcelain has been known since the 1770’s as the finest porcelain
on the market. In 1765 veins of kaolin were discovered outside Limoges.
Kaolin is the precious white clay needed to make high quality porcelain.
A few years later, several factories became part of the royal Sevres
manufacturers. At that time the porcelain manufactured in Limoges
was left white and sent to Sevres to be painted. At the beginning
of the 19th century because of its kaolin vein, its lower labor
costs, its river and its wood reserve Limoges porcelain manufacturing
sites started to spring up. Also at the beginning of the 19th century
Limoges Hinged Box started to appear, and soon became a noble collectible
item for some of the most prestigious people in the world like Madame
de Pompadour. At that time, nobles would buy and collect Limoges
Box to store expensive diamonds, rings, gold, love letters and precious
tobacco. PPA Limoges Box are made the same way Limoges Box are made
during the 1770’s. PPA is one of the only companies left in
Limoges still having in house the full manufacturing chain of Limoges
box. They do not subcontract any part of the process so that they
